About The “Checkbook”

This little book – Surviving Change in the Trenches – is about successfully dealing with change in the modern organization and life. It is called a “checkbook” because it can fit into your pocket or purse like a checkbook. The “checkbook” contains quotes from my scrapbook of advice and wisdom that I’ve collected over the years. I have repeated and shared the advice and wisdom with success.

The advice and wisdom I’ve collected over the years have helped others and me deal with change realistically and with a smile. Change is always present and should be perceived positively, as an adventure.

How the “Checkbook” Came About

Many people have asked me about the “checkbook” since it’s original printing. How long did it take to write it? Why did I write it? What inspired me? Actually, the “checkbook” came about by accident.

A small group that I formed with a former employer asked me to speak at the annual conference. Due to down sizing, my position was one of many eliminated.

My presentation was simply titled “Surviving Change in the Trenches”.

In order to develop the presentation, I went to a worn and tattered folder of wisdom and advice from family, friends and mentors over the years. Not being able to decide on one or two specific selections, I developed a scrapbook, and gave it as a handout.

Friends and acquaintances asked for the scrapbook and also for me to speak at their civic or professional group meetings. We quickly decided that there must be a better way to produce the scrapbook in larger quantities than the neighborhood copy store. The result, the “checkbook.”
